Q: What is your hair story? What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A: I was born with naturally curly hair. If I were asked what hair type I was I would have to say a mixture of 3c/4a hair. I have used a relaxer since I was 6 years old and fried and dyed it since. From braids to weekly wash and sets. I practically lived in a hair salon.
Q: When and why did you decide to start wearing your hair naturally?
A: I decided to wear my natural hair when I was 20 years old. I was just tired of my hair being unhealthy so I completely stopped using a relaxer but was still straightening my hair as I transitioned. I became obsessed with my new growth and then one day I just chopped all of the processed hair off. Best decision I’ve ever made.
Q: Did you have any big fears about going back to your natural texture?
A: Of course. I knew other people would have a lot to say. Which they did and still do. Most of the time it’s negative but I’ve been able to turn the other cheek and remain unbothered.
Q: What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?
A: LEAVE IN CONDITIONER! Omg. I can’t not use it. Also, I love my hair masques. As far as styling, I’m completely obsessed with Shea Moisture and Miss Jessie’s hair care lines. Their products love my hair! From the Pillow Soft Curls to the Curl Enhancing Smoothie.
Q: What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A: If you’re thinking about embracing your natural hair then you are already half way there, just do it! It can be intimidating at times, but it is worth it for more ways than one. It’s YOUR hair. If you love and take care of it it will love you back. I promise!
Q: How can we keep up with you and your journey i.e. blog, twitter, facebook, fotki, tumblr, personal or professional website? (Optional)
A: You can follow my Instagram. I always have a hair update on there @anayalatr
