Tight & Curly by Teri

I found this great site called Tightly Curly Hair by a woman named Teri. Why would I be looking at a website for woman with curly hair?... you ask. Well it's simple, I have two daughters that are mulit-cultural, and they have big curly hair. We have tons of products at home, but still have not found that perfect combination of shampoo and conditioner for them.

So often, instead of them having these big beautiful curls, they walk around with curly puff balls for hair (here is a picture if my little ones with their hair down).

It's cute, but I know it can be better. I am still learning. So for me, websites like Teri's are godsends. I look forward to learning more about what products to look for what will work best for my girls. Something that will keep the curls formed and keep their hair moisturized.

I am so looking forward to checking out a website called Mixed Chicks: http://www.mixedchicks.net , a website by Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge.

Feel free to offer suggestions or share you experience with curly hair.

  3. Thanks Dizzietron! My girls and I are mainly just trying to find a combination of products that will keep their hair healthy and moisturized. We have tried a few good brands of hair products, but their hair gets dry very easily. So we are making progress, but still always looking for that perfect match. Good with your hair goals... :-)

  5. This is my second go at going natural. I have been natural now for over a year now. I have very dry hair. I used the tightly curly method but still had dry and tangled hair. I tried so many combing conditioners until finally.........John Frieda's root awakening conditioner (at Walmart). I use that with a castor oil and Vatika oil as a sealant and "Wa-La"! That did it for me.

I just came across your blog and I just wanted to say that your 2 little girls are adorable and they have very pretty hair.

  7. Karen,
Thank you for posting these pics of your daughters' hair! I am multi-cultural and my hair is the spitting image of the girl on the right! I, too, have this weird "fuzzy" part right in the back of my skull (it used to madden my white grandma when she did my hair every day!) that makes the rest appear too frizzy sometimes. I'm experimenting w/ ways to keep myself "curlier", too. Thanks for the hints!!

  8. Karen, how did the tightly curly method work out for your girls? I happen to think Teri's method is genius and it seems to work well. I have tried the mixed chicks product and i didn't think that it worked well. I have super thick 3C hair and the product was too light I think for my hair type. I believe it would be awesome for a 3B curly.

  9. Those girls have BEEEA-UTIFUL hair. I have had natural "salt & pepper" hair since the age of 15.. never attempted to dye it, not looking forward to either. But I noticed that within the areas where the most gray hair is, also has the most frizz. I haven't had a clue on how to control this, no matter how much frizz control products I try. (Any suggestions, ladies?)

  10. I have hair that is the product of an african american/native american mix father and a afircan american/irish mother. My fine shoulder length curls range 3a, 3b, 3c, and 4a. I often joke that I have all my ancestor's hair on my head. I just started using Teri's tightly curly method and, to my surprise the method works fantastically on my hair. I have always wanted to grow my hair past my shoulders like my sister who has type 2 hair and hair down to her butt, but have never been able to do so. Teri's methods have worked better at keeping my hair moist and limiting breakage than anything else have ever tried. I use Redkin's All Soft shampoo to wash, and All Soft conditioner to condition wash or rinse, and comb out. I use about a 1/3 cup of condition on my head to detangle and form my curls (I add more if needed) and then refresh my curls with 1 part conditioner and 3 parts water in a spray bottle daily. At night I put Moracconoil on the ends and losely braid. This is the most controlled and frizz free my natural hair has been in 50 years.

  13. I just found Teri's website and bought her book. I am going to try her tight-curly method. While I have kept my hair natural, I have been flat ironing it so it is presentable at work. My hair gets so dry and frizzy and PUFFY when I try to wear it curly.
