Tanavoho Braid Hairstyle

I've been so excited to see new hairstyles created and old hairstyles that come back from our history.

My latest fascination has been with Tanavoho Braids. From a quick google search, I learned that -

The Tanavoho, a crown-like hairstyle featuring short knotless braids and voluminous hair ends, is a traditional Malagasy hairstyle, specifically worn by single Sakalava women in Madagascar. Rihanna's iconic hair puffs in the British Vogue issue of May 2020 brought the Tanavoho into the mainstream, popularizing the style. The Tanavoho hairstyle is considered a part of Malagasy culture and traditions, and it often incorporates beads, shells, or other decorative elements.

Here's a more detailed look at the Tanavoho's history:

  • Malagasy Culture: The Tanavoho is a hairstyle deeply rooted in Malagasy culture, particularly among the Sakalava people, a tribe in the north of Madagascar.

  • Single Sakalava Women: The style was traditionally worn by single Sakalava women, signifying their marital status.

  • Crown Braid: The Tanavoho is characterized by a crown braid with short knotless braids and large, voluminous hair ends.

  • Decorative Elements: The braids often feature beads, shells, or other decorative elements, adding to the hairstyle's cultural significance.

  • Modern Popularization: The Tanavoho gained widespread attention after Rihanna wore it on the cover of British Vogue in May 2020.

  • Black Braiders: Black braiders have been instrumental in reviving and popularizing the Tanavoho, highlighting the cultural significance of the style.

In essence, the Tanavoho is a traditional hairstyle with deep roots in Malagasy culture, particularly among the Sakalava people. It has gained modern popularity due to its distinctive appearance and Rihanna's influence, showcasing the beauty and cultural significance of the hairstyle.

SLAYYY Hair Supply

Hello Natural Beauties.  I wanted to share a great brand of braiding hair by SLAYYY!  If you are looking get your hair braided; or braid the hair with your loc's for a new look, SLAYYY is the place to go.

The hair brand is by Diann Valentine who founded SLAYYY Hair in 2021 Diann V.  The hair feels soft and easy to work with.
I've had locs for quite a while, but hope to do some fun styles with the hair that matches my hair color. The color of this hair I choose is SLAYYY Spice (#30).

"Diann Valentine founded SLAYYY Hair in 2021 after years of wearing braids and experiencing increased itching, scalp irritation, scabbing, and breakage regularly with her own scalp. Determined to find a healthier and non-toxic solution, she started developing what has become known as the SLAYYY Secret Sauce. After two years of intense research, trial and error, and invaluable feedback from the strong community of braiders around the country, SLAYYY was born. “Women deserve more care and respect for our contribution to the hair and beauty industry, and I’m so proud to champion this movement on behalf of my sisters and now able to offer black women a superior product while wearing protective styles.," says Diann.

In addition to SLAYYY, Diann is also the President and Creative Director of Glow + Flow Beauty, a beauty retail concept store with locations in Inglewood and Hawthorne, California. Glow + Flow Beauty is reimagining the shopping experience for black women and creating an environment in urban neighborhoods where they feel at home as valued customers. The expansion plan for Glow + Flow Beauty involves a franchise model of land and business ownership through collaborating with black women, financiers, and organizations. Diann believes that the best way to change the trajectory of a community is for the residents to own it, and every urban community needs a Glow + Flow.

Before entering the beauty space, Diann enjoyed an illustrious career as an internationally acclaimed wedding and event designer, having produced a plethora of celebrations for celebrities, high-net-worth individuals, and Fortune 500 companies across the globe. Her achievements include being a two-time author, international public speaker, and television host working to turn dreams into reality for women in love and those looking for love. With a flourishing business and career, Diann has achieved numerous accomplishments and has inspired many during numerous domestic and international public speaking engagements. Her love of personal touch and human interaction allows her to excite audiences and mesmerize them with her years of production and life experiences wrapped in an electrifying smile.

As a proud black woman, Valentine is a pioneer. With many titles above her head, Diann is just getting started. Diann Valentine lives in Los Angeles with her husband and business partner, Damon Haley."
