Hot Heads!

Hot Head microwavable deep conditioning heat caps are a great way to give your hair a hot oil treatment.  A hot oil treatment can not only give you hair the much needed moisture it needs, but it is also a great way to help cut down on breakage when you are trying to de-tangle and or wash your hair.

When I used my hot head, I could tell right away how much softer and more manageable my hair was. "Hot Head is handmade locally by our team of skilled seamstresses! Hot Head is the original flax filled, microwavable, deep conditioning heat cap. It is allowing people all over the world the freedom to achieve the results of a salon quality deep conditioning treatment at home with ease." - About Hot Head

I also recommend the Hot Head Spritzer's that come in different scents. My favorite scent is the Dark Coconut. You add a spray of the scent you like, to you cap before using it on your hair, and it is very soothing.

Outtasight 3-in-1 Scalp Serum

I am so happy that I have found Outtasight Hair 3-in-1 Scalp Serum.   I have had so many problems with hair breakage when I wash my hair.  I would lose gobs and gobs of hair to the point that I was worried about hair loss.

I used this serum after my last hair wash, and I had minimal hair loss.  My scalp felt refreshed and my hair look healthier after being styled.  I have found a forever product and will be using this on my hair after every single wash.

"Get Ready to AAHH! Our multi-tasking hair serum for dry scalp eases scalp tension, itchiness, and irritation while providing the optimal environment to maximize hair growth. Now, you can trust that your natural hair and scalp will flourish! The perfect maintenance for all of your style changes. For natural and/or color-treated hair. Perfect to use with sew-ins, braids and wigs."

I would also like to thank Outtasight for giving me a shout out on their website.

It is always great to see an artist that is passionate about making art that celebrates our brown skin!

Caresse's inspirational story

Hi my name is Caress Wilson, I can remember  being three and not liking how I look. As a little girl I would pick myself apart I hated everything about the way I looked. There was this one time I was riding in the back seat of my dads car staring in the rare view mirror at myself and I hated what I saw I was eight years old. When I turned about 12 I started to defined how I felt about myself based on how I thought my hair made me look.  There fore, I constantly changed my hair style causing so much damage to my hair. Two years ago at the age of 24 I had started to do some soul searching and also had just had my second child.

At this point of time I no longer knew what to do in regards to my hair I had been doing my own braids and sew-ins but with two kids I no longer had the time or money to do my own hair or pay to go to the beauty shop.  Then something told me to give dreadlocks a try. I was scared so I went to YouTube and Googled some images of women with dreadlocks as well as instructions on how to do them. So after a month or so of contemplating on rather or not to do dreadlocks I decided to do dreadlocks in my hair. I can say that the journey of my hair was one of many paths but I must say I do believe that I absolutely love my hair now and not just because it makes me beautiful.

#NaturalIsProfessional

"#NaturalIsProfessional is a photo campaign collaboration with Professionals with Natural Kinks & Curls and Happy Hair Boutique. “Natural Is Professional” aims to show that many high-demanding career women rock natural hair in their workspace.

In February 2016, a number of high school students received backlash about their natural hair being “untidy, un-groomed, unkempt and looking like it hadn’t been combed for days.” Also February marks Happy Hair's 3rd Annual 'Love Your Natural Hair' Month. It only felt natural to join the two. 15 Natural Hair Professionals and four up and coming Natural Hair Young Professionals, including a medical engineer, a dentist, a CPA, a future doctor, a business owner and more, came out to show their support for these students and to prepare them “for today’s job market.” The result is countless stereotype-breaking, positive black hair images flooding social media timelines to make people rethink what professional hair can be." - #NaturalsProfessional

Meet Veronica!

I was born with tight fine curls. As a young child, mom believed in getting my hair pressed for special occasions and rarely allowed me to wear my hair out. At the age of 13 I convinced my mom to let me get a jehri curl and after two years, hated my hair. Against her better judgement, she allowed me to convince her to relax my and it broke off terribly, leaving with damaged hair and a bruised ego.

At the age of 18 I joined the Air Force and learned to care for my hair using low end box relaxers, because I couldn’t afford nor did I want to save for regular salon visits. Overtime, my hair became thin and damage.

When I turned 40, after going through postpartum shedding twice, I decided that maybe I could get back the hair I once had as a child. In June 2004, I made the decision to never relax again. I was afraid to ‘big chop’, so I found a local stylist who cut off my relaxed ends every 6-8 weeks until all the relaxer was gone. Slowly, I saw my hair change, into the hair that I remembered as a child.

Today, I am 3 years and 11 months (flat iron free) and my hair is blossoming and healthier than it’s ever been.

Lupita Nyong’o's Second VOGUE Cover

Lupita wows on this gorgeous cover for Vogue.  She also talks about some life experiences that has brought her to this day -

"Her first memory of fashion was at age five, wearing her “very eighties red cord miniskirt with suspender straps. Presentation is extremely important in Kenya. You dress formally. You can’t just wear flip-flops. My mother always had her own style. She wore A-line, tea-length flowery dresses, very well fitting. Her nails were always perfectly done.” As a girl in Nairobi, Lupita recalls, “salons were a big feature in my life. We would go every two weeks to get our hair braided, washed, or treated. That’s where I read American, British, and a few African magazines. Then I would design my own clothes. In Kenya it’s much cheaper to get clothes made than to buy them. We would have everything run up by a tailor, or my aunt Kitty, who is very creative, would sew things for me.”

It may seem an unlikely combination, but politics were as ever-present in the Nyong’o household as style. Lupita’s father, Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, now a senator, was for a long period an opposition politician under the repressive Moi regime. He spent three years in self-imposed exile with his family in Mexico, where Lupita was born.

The Nyong’os returned to Nairobi when Lupita was one. The following years she remembers as “scary, but I was at an age where you couldn’t fully understand what was happening.” Her father was at times detained in jail, once for an entire month, and the family “had to destroy a lot of his documents. I wasn’t allowed to go to school. We were basically locked up in the house. The curtains were shut all the time, and we were just burning papers.” She says the experience made her resilient. “I was definitely exposed to some extreme situations. Tragedy is something that I have known and that I have tried to accept as part of life. But I don’t dwell on it. . . . ”   Read the full article here.

Traeh's Big Chop

"In [the video below], I will be showing you a portion of my journey from relaxed hair to natural hair. I did my big chop January 28th, 2014. I've been transitioning since Summer 13' (not sure of the exact date). Initially I was going to transition but I got tired of having thin relaxed hair and trying to deal with two textures so I just decided to do my big chop. I am also on a no heat journey so that I can improve the overall health of my hair. I hope my journey inspires you to go natural whether you decide to transition or do the big chop. In my experience, I believe the big chop was the best thing for me to do. The only regret I have is that I wish I did my big chop sooner :)"  ~ Traeh
