  1. Hi Karen,

I love your blog. Please keep up the good work. I have a question. I am strongly considering locs because my natural hair is taking more time away from my life than I would like. The detangling/ twisting/ untwisting/ braiding routine is becoming tiresome. I saw a blog post on "A Black Girl With Long Hair" about a girl who took her locs out because they were bad for her scalp. What is your opinion of this? How did you start your locs and do you have any regrets? Also, do you feel that they hold energy as I have often heard? Any information would be very much appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Contemplating Locs

  4. Thank you for the kind words Contemplating Loc’s! I have actually never heard of loc’s being bad for someone’s scalp. I think the only way that could be true, is if the person was styling their loc’s in a way that was causing stress or tension on the scalp - and therefore causing irritation. I myself have never had scalp problems with my loc’s. Quite the opposite. When I use to have permed hair, wear weaves and constantly trying to keep my hair straight – that was definitely bad on my hair and scalp. I think loc’s, if maintained well, and styled without stressing the scalp or hair - is a very healthy choice. One of my loctician started my hair for me with the palm roll method (I only go to a loctician once a year as a treat. I maintain my own hair regularly.)

I have no regrets what so ever. I love my hair soooooo much!! Even on the bad hair days, I can put on an amazing wrap and still rock my loc’s. I am so happy and blessed that I allowed myself to live a naturally beautiful life. I did have my hair unpermed when I was transitioning, and it was very difficult to maintain. You don’t realize how much work your hair is once you stop putting chemicals in it.

I don’t necessarily believe that loc’s have their own energy. So I would never cut my hair because of a hardship or bad time in my life. I do believe that if you have a bad diet, are not drinking enough water or taking care of yourself – that your loc’s will suffer and possibly weaken – causing loc’s to break off. Feel free to email me at naturalhairbeauty@gmail.com if you want to share any thing else or ask any more questions. Thank you for all of these great questions.

    Karen
